This is Not a Caterpillar, It’s a Flock of European Bee-eaters!
Or a flock of birds, colored loudly. It might look like a bright green caterpillar to you, but is probably just another European Bee-eater. At times the show all at once and you might see hundreds of there beautiful birds acting like a rolling rainbow in the sky.
What are European Bee-eaters?
The European Bee-eater is one of these stunning feathered creatures. They have colourful lime, yellow and blue feathers which are very vivid. They inhabit parts of Europe, North Africa and some areas in Asia. Because they feed on the wing, open areas such as fields and clearings are their favored habitat.
What do they eat?
European Bee-eaters as the name says they love to feed themselves from bees! They prefer insects too, such as wasps and beetles. This species of bird is an expert at the hunting craft. They have the ability to catch insects mid-air while gliding. They even bang the bees off a twig after capture to rid themselves of stingers. This makes them safe to eat.
How do they live?
Bee-eater bird with bright plumages, European Bee-eaters are sociable birds. Sociable parent wasps, shrikes are often seen in groups of 10 to 50 birds. They nest in sandy banks or cliffs. Each of these nests has huge corridors where the female lays their eggs Males bring food to females and guard the nest.
Why are they important?
They need to maintain the balance of going single-handedly without any help and for this they prey on our European Bee-eaters. They also help with weed control, keeping the ecosystem in balance. Their bright presence is also a beautiful addition to our world. Seeing them take to the sky and hunt their prey is a treat for any bird-watcher or nature-lover.
