The Lonely Gemsbok of Sossusvlei
The Home of the Gemsbok
In the centre of Namib Desert, a lone gemsbok walks amongst the dunes at famous Sossusvlei. One of the oldest deserts in the world — The Namib Desert. It is home to some magnificent beauty and exotic wildlife. Among the desert true hartebeests, one of its main known animals is gemsbok with long curved horns and stunning color.
The red dunes tower above the sky in a spectactular backdrop. The sand dunes formed and windblown can rise above 300 meters. a collection of fancy sand that looks like golden fire in the sun. The gemsbok looks stark against the bright landscape. Its coat is soft brown with striking white markings on its face and long, black stripes. Have you ever seen a Gembok before, the animal is designed for desert heat and can still keep its freelance.
Life in the Desert
Gemsbok – this beautiful animal is very strong and can travel long journey. Since it derives moisture from the vegetation on which it feeds, without water feed can go for days. They feed mostly on small bushes and grasses that grow in the desert. It can be found under bushes where they search for shade because of the heat. Gemsbok feeding on the dung in the cooler evening
Food and water can be tough to come by in the vast Namib Desert. But the gemsbok is always on alert, its senses honed to perceive any threats. It is a critical part of the desert ecosystem. It may be preyed upon by lions and spotted hyenas but the gemsbok is one of the stongest antelopes giving it speed to escape.
