A Dapper Gentleman of the Sea

Beneath the ice in the frigid waters of the Arctic, an incredible creature quietly observes as we pass by. This is a walrus, and it looks very smart. At the same time, it is large and heavy but if there were a place for an invisible tank: that would very correctly be its icy home. The tusks and mustachioed face of a walrus are hard to overlook, but they likewise blend into the ice and white snow.

The Walrus: A Unique Presence

The walrus isn’t just any old animal, it is actually in a class of its own. Its sea-lion-esque body tips the scales at over a thousand pounds. And somehow it rests lightly on the water. Have you ever seen a walrus lazing around on some ice or cruising along (with its friends) in the ocean? Since the climate is cool, it bides out in a grayish dark colored skin.

The Sloth: A Gentle Giant in its Environment Feeds primarily on clams and other shellfish which it finds through the ocean floor Walrus searches for food under sand with the help of its whiskers, which is a sharp and strong finder. Watching how they dive down in search of their next meal is interesting to see.

We go gliding by this splendid creature, and it makes us feel like we are part of the story. The walrus appears at peace and happy, smoking a cigarette while in the water. You can even see its big eyes watching us as we walk up, it seems to wonder why we are here. A poignant example of why we should respect wildlife and their habitat.

The Arctic Sea is a unique and sensitive marine ecosystem. We can enjoy it from a distance watching and celebrating the beauty of this animal in its natural environment. After all, this amazing creature should be able for our children to see.

The walrus is bigger than the animal itself, it represents wild spaces and their preservation in an environmentally endangered ocean. Let us treasure these moments and work to maintain the health of our planet for all its creatures.
