Appearance of the Painted Dog
Painted Dog has its own unique appearance. It has a grey, yellow and white coat. Every dog has a distinct pattern, just like humans have unique fingerprints. These animals with their large ears can hear very well. Their bright, alert eyes whisper intelligence and zest. The common size of these dogs can be considered medium, so their weight may fall in the range of 40 to 80 pounds.
Habitat in the Okavango Delta
Okavango Delta (a Botswana marsh) Numerous animals call it home; however, the Painted Dog has to be top of mind. In the wild, they choose open savannas and forests in which to search for food and play. Here their prey… the likes of antelope and smaller mammals have a good place to get water from in turn, making it ideal for them too. Painted Dogs live in packs which actually improves their chances of survivable numbers and being able to hunt together.
Social Behavior
Their social behaviour is among the most facinating to me about Painted Dogs. Live in packs Packs can consist of 10 members, now maxed out at 15. Every member in it acts as a pack. They cooperate to find kids and watch over young dogs. It is an incredible sight to watch them hunt. They hunt co-operatively for their prey, working as a team using cunning.
Importance to the Ecosystem
The animals are important to the ecosystem in Okavango, however they spread very fast and local farmers face their cattle being taken as prey. They perform cull (population controlling) of animals they hunt. This balance guarantees that the environment remains sustainable. Sadly the Painted Dog is endangered. It is imperative to conserve these graceful animals and the woods where they reside.
Painted Dog is an enigmatic animal that certainly needs more attention, rightfully so! Being so colorful, social and beautiful while playing an important ecological role … it is a true gem of the Okavango Delta.
